Why the color of tyres (tires) is BLACK?

If you look at the color of tyres of all vehicles, aircrafts, bicycles etc around you will find them Black in color, why? Why not green, blue or white?

  1. Rubber in its raw, unprocessed state is milky in colour, but very soft. To use rubber in tyres, it has to be hardened by the addition of carbon molecules. This process is known as vulcanisation and is responsible for the black colouration of tyres.


  2. Raist is right, its the carbon black that makes the tires black.

  3. carbon is black. rubber is very soft. adding carbon to rubber improves the density and tire wear.

    edit: to vulcanize rubber, add sulfur and heat. that has nothing to do with the color.

  5. To minimize degradation by UV radiation. Carbon added to the rubber absorbs the UV radiation at a shallow depth, minimizing damage to deeper layers and providing longer life for the tires
