Not so in my country.

I fly  overseas and domestic regularly and no travel agent in my city has been able to come anywhere near the prices I can get on the internet.

Internet is miles cheaper.

Travel agents have to make a profit to survive so they add on a commission because airlines do not in many cases give them a commission. So who pays? You do.

You do have to be patient if you want a cheap deal and be prepared to check out a few dates

Because the costs for fuel is going up and several smaller airlines have already folded due to these high fuel costs.

The airline is in the business of making a profit for their services and not losing money so whenever they are faced with higher operating costs, they tend to pass this extra expense onto the flyers who buy tickets to fly in their planes.

The rising costs of oil is affecting everything worldwide, and until a solution is found that deals with this fuel problem, look to see everything going up in price.

International airline companies allocate a certain number of seats (which are assigned a different class) to travel agencies or associations that are affiliated with them. These seats are cheaper but are very limited (like around 10 seats only). The travel agencies are given discounts to offer these seats, usually up 15-50% cheaper.

If you are travelling only to a single destination, it's easy to get accommodated, and you will get lower fare than when you book online. However in some cases, for instance in my case, when I travelled 25K miles with four layovers at different cities, all sectors in my flight must have the discounted class. Otherwise, the travel agency cannot offer the entire route at the discounted fare. What happens is that the agency will request the airline for a quotation, so basically they will offer the normal fare online.

Some airline companies however do not practice this. Instead, they offer cheaper fare online than when you book thru travel agencies or ticketing offices.

So if you need international flights with popular airlines like Lufthansa or Northwest Airlines or American Airlines, try booking thru travel agencies first.
