  1. The compressor is located at the bottom of most units. It puts out heat and will "fight" the freezer unit. Since cold air falls, a freezer on top will automatically cool the frig section.

  2. In older models when the freezer compartment was actually inside the refrigerator it was more efficient to have it at the top since the cold air from the freezer would move down and help cool the contents of the refrigerator.  Newer units use the same idea even though they have seperate compartments, simply using a duct system to move the cool air.

  3. Efficiency in the operation and construction of the frig.   Cold air sinks/flows downward.   Most refrigerators put the freezer on top with simply an opening that moves some of the very cold freezer air into the frig area to keep it cool.   It is easier to build (read: cheaper) and is a reasonably efficient design.   They do indeed make refrigerators with the freezers on the bottom - I know... I had one.  They are tougher to find though and often cost more to both buy and operate.

  4. Marketing studies showed that many people prefer the freezer above the refrigerator.
