Question:

Why the heck does my voice STILL break when I sing?

This is so frustrating. I'm 27 years old. My voice still breaks even in the low register - I'm not even reaching for a note and it will randomly break. I think sometimes I take in too much air and the excess air pressure on my vocal chords causes it. But even when I'm speaking this happens sometimes. It makes me nervous when I sing because I'm hoping it won't happen which of course makes me tense and tight and probably makes it even more likely to happen. AHHH!!!!

  1. as i see 2 choices,, use it ! (my favorite to hear in others:) or slow down and practice,, practice the notes that break/faulter, i dont think faulter i think unique :)  but hey if its killin ya do the register your tryin for slowly until it's "perfect"

  2. The primary reason the voice breaks when you try to sing is because of tension in the voice. When you use the muscles in the throat, it pushes your vocal chords together to much which can cause callauses on them, just like if you work with your hands too much it will cause callauses. These are called vocal nodules and can not be removed except for by surgury. Its very important that you learn NOT to use the muscles surrounding your voice box and also the muscles in your jaw. Massage them and keep them loose while singing. Hope this helps :)

  3. It's tension in your voice.  Are you pushing for notes that aren't coming naturally to you? Warm up (or down) to those notes instead, then.  Relax your jaw, relax your neck/larynx, and support your breath.  When you breath, place your fists just above your hips and just below your ribs - if you are breathing correctly from your diaphragm, you will feel this area expand - you need that expansion to adequately support your voice.  Without adequate breath support and too much tension, of course your voice will break!!! It's your body's way of informing you something isn't right. Relax and take it slow. Are you going to a voice technique coach? Try finding a reputable one in your town to help you through this! :) That will help your stress and enable you to sing better and more healthily!

    best of luck!

  4. Just keep practicing. Close your eyes and think that you are the best. You can easily do it if you want. If you just trust yourself and keep practicing, you will be a good singer one day for sure. I am not even joking.
