  1. Well you don’t get things for free in this world. You have to pay a lawyer or adoption agency.  If you do an adoption where your matched with a birthmother sometimes you have to pay for her medical costs, hospital stay etc. If you’re adopting from a different state you may have to go and stay some time in the state before its clear for you to leave with the baby.  Same thing if your adopting from a different country sometimes you have to stay there for a spell, there are even some where you go and visit your to be adopted child but you don’t get to take them home yet, then on your 2nd trip you get to take them.

It can be cheaper to adopt from Foster care but most of their kids are older, though sometimes you can find some babies, I myself was a foster adopted baby.

  2. Many adoption agencies in the US are FOR-Profit, not non-profit agencies.

  3. nothing is free, and if your going to complain about the cost of adoption then your in for a ruid awakening. This shouldnt be a concern for you if you really want a child

  4. It's because there are so many people involved that refuse to work for free. Each person that does something to help the adoption expects to be paid. Unfortuantely, it's expensive any way you go about it. If it isn't financially expensive (private and international adoption), the costs are in emotional pain, suffering and time (foster care).

People don't have babies for free either. The delivery costs thousands of dollars. The international adoption costs about the same as giving birth to a healthy baby without insurance and includes an international trip to your childs birth country.

On a side note: most people who have new cars pay more for their car than they do for an adoption. They will pay big bucks to upgrade to heated leather seats, custom paint and tinted windows but the thought of spending that money to change the life of a child is just mind boggling. Fortunately, there are people who feel that changing a life of a child is worth not getting the new car every year.

  5. You're right though. A foreign adoption costs at least $20,000. I know a couple who adopted a baby domestically 8 years ago and paid almost $10,000. If you want a close to free child, go through social services.

  6. Adoption is NOT buying a baby!  Mostly it's expensive because you have to use a lawyer for the paperwork.  Plus there are costs like travelling to pick up the child when it's an international adoption, and paying for prenatal care in an infant adoption.  When you go through the state in a foster-to-adopt program, it actually doesn't cost much at all.

  7. It is government sanctioned human trafficking, fees and bribes have to be paid.

  8. The fees are for all the services the agency provides to every birthmother helped.

The agency I volunteer at receives calls from over 400 women a year!  They provide these women and their children with counseling, emergency food, clothing, formula and diapers, taxi fare, doctor visits, etc. and these are just the women who are NOT placing their babies for adoption!  Who's going to pay for that?

And then there's the birthmothers who get housing paid for for 10 months, along with all their utilities, groceries, clothing, transportation, medical care, etc.,  and then choose to PARENT their babies!  Who's going to pay for that?

Then there are the cases where a baby has been placed for adoption already, and the birthmother or birthfather then comes back before the adoption is finalized and tries to get custody of the baby from the adoptive parents.  It often takes 1 - 2 years of court hearings and trials before the case is settled.   Who is going to pay for that?

And then, there are the special needs babies that the agency reduces or eliminates the adoption fee for, so they may be adopted.  These babies may have HIV, born with no brain, born blind or very ill.  Who is going to pay for these expenses?

And of course, there are the birthmothers who DO place their babies for adoption, and may recieve all the above mentioned -- housing, groceries, clothing, utilities, transportation, medical care, etc.  Who pays for this?

The agency pays for all of this.  That is why adoption fees are so high.  And if your adoption fails, the agency absorbs that financial loss - not the adoptive parent.

And then there are the lawyers!  Agencies have to hire an attorney to represent the baby, one for the birthmother, and one for each named possible birthfathers.  Sometimes a diligent search is conducted to find the birthfather, and sometimes a private detective has to be hired, too.

And there is office rent, phones, salaries, office supplies, etc.

You see, you do not pay JUST for YOUR child's birthmothers expenses and that is it.  The expenses have to be paid for ALL clients, so that the few birthmothers who do place their baby for adoption, can.  This is what it really takes to keep those doors open and those calls answered.  Just thought you would like to know the real deal!

  9. l see your point, it's sometimes very upsetting to me to think of all the children who are waiting for good parents and families that are perhaps unable to adopt due to the cost!  l know a lot of people say it shouldn't be a concern, but l know myself that my husband and l manage to make ends meet to meet all of our children's needs, but we would never be able to come up with thousands of dollars up front!  lt just wouldn't be physically possible, no matter how much we love our children (we are foster parents to 3 of our kids).  My only advice would be to adopt through fostering, as we are in the process of doing with our second youngest.  lt is just as rewarding, believe me, and is significantly less expensive.  Besides, since when did a human life carry a price tag? Children are priceless!!!

  10. Hahaha... Amen, brotha.
