  1. If you bothered to look at a map you would realise that Los Angeles isn't in a desert.

What about London, new york, paris, tokyo, moscow, seoul, beijing, shanghai, sao palo, mumbai, calcutta, chicago, the list goes on. All of those are located on river systems or a large body of water in fertile landscapes.

  2. Los Angeles climate is not desert. It receives anywhere from 16-32 inches of rain/year.  The summers are dry and sunny but winters cool and wet.

Here is a short blurb re: the climate. There is also a very good graph showing the monthly temperatures and precipitation.

Why is the city located where it is?

    Natural Harbor —

Portuguese explorer Juan  Cabrillo, 1542, saw the marshland and natural harbor at the northwest end of San Pedro Bay. He also saw the smoke rising from the hills caused by the native Americans and called the area Bahia de Los Fumas or “Bay of Smokes”. The area remained basically untouched until the late 1760's when Spanish and the missionaries came to colonize the West Coast. By the mid 1800 the San Pedro area, because of its natural harbor, had become a grown concern and was flourishing (1848 joined the Union). People wanted the harbor to be the "gateway" into North America. Politicians, businessmen etc flooded to the area. Eventually it was renamed Los Angeles after a fellow by the name of Phineas Banning who was also known as 'the Father of Los Angeles Harbor'. It was Stephen M. White, a senator from California, that pushed through a regulation that made the Congress declare San Pedro Bay as the official port of Los Angeles in 1897 and by 1909 the the entire area including the port became the City of Los Angeles.

  3. well. possibly b/c

in 1870s Southern Pacific Railroad company built a rail line to LA

Oil was discovered in Los angeles in late 1800s and by 1923 LA was producing 1/4 of the worlds petroleum

1920s Hollywood was started (by immigrants).

    They've hosted the olympics twice.

    just some ideas...

  4. It's not. It's actually on the edge of a desert, right next to the Pacific ocean. So it became one of the most populated cities in the world because of its status as a seaport town. Today, it's still one of the top two port cities in the USA.
