Why the laptop keyboard going crazy and how to fix it.?

When it starts up the Caps lock is on and when I press a different key it turns off the Caps lock. When Windows is running I and I open up Microsoft word and Mozilla Firefox all these nonstop Y's show up and when I use the backspace it goes back to the previous page and when I press any key it opens the finder tab (only for Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer). When I click on a program it highlights all the programs that is next to it. Please tell me what is wrong.

It is a HP Laptop and the OS is Windows XP Home Edition.

does it work ok if you plug in an external keyboard? if so look to see if anything is stuck in the laptops keyboard, next thing is to boot up in safe mode, hit F8 on boot to see this, this will tell us if it's a problem with the keyboard or simply a software problem, otherwise gonna be a case of removing the keyboard and plugging back in, in case the connection is poor, only other option is to replace the keyboard
