People tell lies so they can get out of a big problem without big consequences. Most people nowadays can spot lies...so they are tracked down and the liar gets in worse trouble for commiting the crime and lying about it.

Some would prefer to say nothing,but under pressure they would rather say a lie than the truth because it is more convenient or beneficial either for them,or the person involved,especially if the answer will effect someones feelings,sometimes they did something wrong and don't wont to be judged for it,or just hate nosy people and don't see the reason for them to intrude ones privacy.
