Petroleum  product prices are decided by the raw material price which is the crude oil price. Crude oil in large quantities is produced by the gulf countries.A cartel called  OPEC , which consists of the world's largest producers of crude operates in the oil market and decides the output/price of crude. Lesser the output vis a a vis the demand, higher will be the price, and vice versa.The commodities futures market players also operates as a hedgers as well as a speculators on future prices of crude. Crude oil is  produced in exportable quantities by a few oil surplus countries of the world, mainly located in the Persian gulf region.The energy needs of the world make it a much in demand commodity.The development and industrialisation of the underdeveloped and poor countries coupled with the increased demand for crude by the developed countries is resulting in increased demand and price rise of this commodity. The price of crude is quoted  in relation to barrels. The prices of NYMEX, BRENT oil  are quoted in spot as well as futures market.
