the most familiar answer for this is that, diesel is a crude oil, which is very hard in nature....for this to be used in cars, the engine must be specifically built to suit the hardness of diesel, when the diesel is pumped into the engine, the engine parts get rusty very easily compared to that of petrol which is much smoother almost like water in nature.

For this reason the prices of Diesel cars are high.
