  1. Originally, when a rider of a horse approached an unknown rider, he would come up on the left side to keep the reins in the left hand and make his right hand free for greeting or defense in case the other person was hostile.  This put traffic on the left side of the road for centuries.

The British continued this practice because their wagons had seats for the driver, and sitting on the right kept their whips from getting fouled in the cargo.  They passed on the left to judge clearance with oncoming traffic.

Then in the US and some European countries, their heavier wagons had no driver's seat, so teamsters rode on the back of the left rear horse in a team to make their whip hand available for guiding the horses.  I guess they were better whip handlers than the Brits, so they didn't worry about the whip getting tangled with the cargo.  To better judge clearance when passing an approaching wagon, they'd pass on the right.

Asian countries colonized by the British adopted their left-side convention.

Over the years, to ease border crossings, most land-locked nations adopted the right-hand rule.

  2. Basically, it was based on the traditions of the different countries. I have read explanations of how it depended on what was polite when armed men passed each other, on how the drivers of certain types of teams of horses used their whips, and other theories. The bottom line was that traffic flowed better when everyone agreed to travel on one side or the other for each direction, and different countries made different agreements. Cars were later designed to take these conventions into account.

  3. The reason why it is different is because all of us are from different cultures and from different countries and if for say a person from Japan were able to go to the USA, he's get confused since in Japan, people drive on the left hand side that is why their cars are right-handed. in the USA, people drive on the right side. that is why their cars ar left-handed.

In short, that is just how people make and keep the rules/laws.

  4. right and left handed people........
