Question:

Why the steering wheel is vibrating badly only when using the brakes on long downhills?

what's your opinion ?the car a 2006 , i looked at the rotors they look like mirror, also the padbreaks are a quarter of a inch , i will take it in anyway, thanks.

  1. you need to get an alignment!

  5. It is a combination of the rotors and the antilock brakes.  You may need to true the rotors or get new ones.  I just had it done.

  6. Rotors are warped, replace the rotors........unevenly worn rotors will cause the kick back at the brake pedal

  7. If the vibration occurs only when braking, and never during coasting, accelerating, or decelerating, the problem is with the brakes. Most likely there is a rotor out of flat. However, you should detect this problem under a variety of braking and not only on long downhills. You may feel the pedal "pump" when braking or feel the car "pulse" speed as it slows down.

    Wheel alignment, a bad tire, or a bad bearing would cause problems all the time and not specifically during braking.

    You should not apply the break for long periods. If you have a long hill you should brake only as needed and use a lower gear. This is for "mountain" roads. A big hill is only a big hill, don't worry about it too much.

  11. rotors are probably warped....they get hot and warp even more...especially on long downhills...and i know im right...your just destroying your rotors....dont ride the brakes next time and don't put it in 2

  12. i agree with the consensus, however you could also have a broken, damaged or frozen caliper!

  13. Maybe the wheels aren't alined correctly.  If thats it then it will be easy for them to fix it when you take it in.

  14. I am guessing that this is just science, as how the back wheels are trying to stop, yet the front wants to keep going..

    Or.. the wind is just too violent.. ive experienced it.. it makes you swerve and stuff.. if that is what you think

  15. You best have the tie-rods checked. If they collapse while you are driving the wheels will actually bend in, and depending on how fast you are going that can be dangerous. If it was a front end alignment situation you would notice this while driving. It would tend to pull to one side, or when you were on the freeway you'd notice it shake at higher speeds. It's not a brake pad problem, but you are going to end up with one if you have to constantly go down long grades. All that means is you'll need to have your brakes serviced on a regular basis for safety sake. Ask around for recommendations on good / reasonable mechanics. Friends and family that have had mechanical issues more than once usually get to know the best mechanics. Don't take any chances. Get it checked out for you and anyone else who rides in the car.
