Why the sudden strange behavior in my dog?

My german wire-haired pointer woke up and started mouthing as if he had eaten something, but when my husband looked in his mouth and felt around, there was nothing. He then became restless, biting at the carpet and seemingly trying to eat anything he could. I gave him water, which he drank quickly and then took him outside, where he proceeded to 'graze' the ground, picking at the grass here and there as he walked around restlessly. When he came in he took more water and then seemed to calm down. What is wrong with him?

Check with a vet first if he ingested some kind of poison giving hydrogen peroxide could make it worse especially if it was anything caustic.

it sounds like he has an upset stomach dogs only eat grass when they want to puke. try giving him some hydrogen peroxide to make him puke anything out that his body is disagreeing with.

Could it be a tooth that is bothering him? Or maybe he slept wrong on his jaw and it just ached a little. If the behavior starts back up, have his teeth, gums, and jaw checked

Sounds like he has a sore throat or a tonsillitis/pharyngitis.  He probably has a bunch of phlegm in the throat that is very uncomfortable.  Dogs have a tendency to eat grass, l**k the carpet, and do several things that you are describing when they have this malady.  If this continues, take him to your vet tomorrow for an exam.

DONT GIVE YOUR DOG ANYTHING. If he is still doing the strange behavior he problebly has an upset stomic. The grass will do the trick but if he is still doing it and will not eat or drink take him to the vet.

I wouldn't have offered him food, but it's a bit late now. If at all possible a vet visit would be preferable. As far as the peroxide that can be a good idea, but you need to know the correct dosage for your sized dog, i.e. contacting your vet. I only know dane size dosage, personally.
