Why the winners bite their medal(s)?

Just wondering... Somehow... When it's chocolate I can imagine but... Isn't hard? Aren't they? Do they purposely did it to leave tooth mark or something?

  2. It goes back to the gold rush days.  Since gold is a soft metal, they tested it's authenticity by biting into it.

  3. hehe to see if the medal is made from real gold or not, i know strange haha.

  4. It goes back to when folks still did commerce in gold coins.  They would make fake coins out of lead and plate them in gold.  Lead is softer than gold but about as heavy, so they would bit it and if it left marks it was lead and not real.

    If i was in that position i wouldnt belive i just won gold, id bite it to see if its real. Just like when you pinch yourself to see if your dreaming.
