Why the young decline the participation in the amercian political system ?

There are loads of young adults that participate in the system.

The issues are generally geared toward older adults and this may be one of the main reasons. They being young don't see the necessity of participation yet. Others may be as yet disillusioned by the mismanagement that continually takes place in our precious system.  But I think they just don't get the fact that this Republic isn't a democracy.

Many young people are simply disillusioned about the American political establishment, among other things.

Politics in America are nothing more than undercover operations to oppress, suppress, depress and repress those who do not think as the Commomwealth of England did in the 1800's.  Look at the real history of America: It was founded on theivery and deceit of another race.  How can you say Christopher Columbus discovered anything that was already there, explored by other races except the English.  History should read correctly as: England stumbled into unexpedited land and people with other languages and features.

They are confused. They are taught by the public school system to be a liberal but common sense and what they see with their own eyes tells them to be a conservative. After they pay their taxes for about 10 years and see their tax dollars get wasted on supporting the lazy and irresponsible, then they come to their senses.

look up civics test scores in college students. even the top schools average pretty poor. blame school curriculum for that.

Maybe they feel their vote doesn't really matter, I mean, why do we still have the electoral college? Or maybe some of them don't really care.  I think that maybe the presidential candidates don't focus so much on the younger people the way they focus on the old, elderly.  They talk, talk, talk about healthcare, and social security...granted we young people should worry about this as well, but for instance, my concern is education.  I am in the military and I joined because I needed money for school. I think about the different school systems in America and how most of them are flawed.  I think that if they want our participation in the system, they need to focus on us a little more.  We are the future, right?  Then they need to focus on it today!

Because the country (and sometimes the world, it seems) is going to h**l in a handbasket (or whatever the expression is) and people feel that nothing they do can change it.  It seems we are forced to vote for the best of several awful candidates, to minimize damage- not actually for someone who is new, different or worthwhile.  It's discouraging!

Well because sadly to say children now days deem education, politics or anything that involves using your brain to be 'not cool' or that person will be called a 'nerd'.

Its safe to say that this is caused by the media. People would rather watch repeats than spend 5 mins. watching the news. Or they rather be engrossed in the entertaining themselves or decorating them selves to be involved in anything educational

Perhaps its because the current crop of politicians are willing to say anything or make any promise to get elected and then turn their back on the voters.

Look at the immigration fiasco, most Democrats and a few Republicans, including the President,  supported anmesty while 85% of the voters were against it.   Look how quick politicians quote "poll findings" when it agrees with what they want - but when the polls disagree, do they care?

And it was only stopped by a serious outcry of the voters, but just wait, at the first opportunity, the politicians will attempt to push through another amnesty bill.

Because many of my generation sees the futility of participating in a system that is inherently corrupt and self replicating, one that cannot be changed by playing by the rules of it. Compliance to it only reinforces it. Don't vote, it only encourages them. The illusion of choice through voting is an insult to our intelligence when it is beyond question the old money elites have constructed and manipulated the current structure of society to remain the elite of it. The American political system has been owned and operated by this same elite since Dec 23, 1913 when printing currency was privatized by the creation of the Federal Reserve making us slaves to bankers and debt. The illusion of a two party system and even that of a Democratic state is a front to a unified organization producing this great play for all sleeping Americans to believe in, while hiding the real power behind the facade of these puppet politicians being used a buffer.  And who's the wiser? Many are too busy fretting about topics such as Paris Hilton's latest shopping spree to give a d**n.

Because we have a all-or-nothing election system which is characterized by low turnout, and the issues are geared toward the older generations.
