  1. Because of earth processes such as a collision between two continental plates at a convergent boundary.

    The different types of mountains are formed by different processes.  In addition to the process mentioned above, mountains are also formed due to volcanism, erosion, and disturbances or an uplift in the earth's crust.

    There are five types of mountains:

    dome-formed by rising magma that does not break through the crust



    fold- formed by collision between two continental plates

    fault-block-formed at a fault when blocks of earth's crust are forced up or down

    volcanic- formed by the eruption of volcanoes

    plateau mountains-formed by erosion
