Question:

Why under hand serve not been developed and taught?

i saw how average tennis players struggle with the serve, the result was usually disasterous. either a lot of double faults, stepping the line, or weak, meaningless put-it-in-the-box type of serve.

the worst part is bad serve undermind and destroy the rest of the game. we saw that happen even at the pro level (i.e. Dementieva)

it is probably the most difficult shot in tennis, and it happens to be the shot to get the point started, why we insist on teaching such a complex motion to average joe? who pick up a racket try to have some fun and realize he can not even get the point started?

under hand serve obviously not going to be effective at the pro level, but for the majority 2.5 - 4.0 players out there, i think i can be a very useful shot and should be taught, wouldn't you agree?

  1. i agree with you. i'm about a 3.5 player and have a pretty good serve, but it annoys me when i play people who can't serve overhead, but do anyway. all they do is hit double faults and if the ball goes over, it's an easy point for me. for some reason, everyone wants to do cool things. serving overhead is cooler then serving underhand so ppl serve overhead which i find retarded. i can serve underhand and my serve will still be faster than the overhead serve. coaches should teach ppl underhand  along with overhead. players should still work on overhead serves, but not during games.

  2. the reality is that the over hand serve is supposed to be a player strong point because when you serve your supposed to feel in control of your game. By serving the ball under hand it will not only give your opponent the advantage it will also risk you losing your serve. if you are a good tennis player you will know that in order to be good you need to have a strong serve that is one of the things you need to practice and serving underhand will NOT give you the advantage. I don't not agree that serving underhand should be taught and i don't think professional coaches don't even think about that because your supposed to be able to rely on your serve to win some games.

  3. I don't even play tennis and I feel comfortable answering this question.  An underhand serve removes the entire advantage a player gets from serving.  An overhand serve puts your opponent on the defensive from the start of the point which is an advantage to the server.  An underhand serve completely reverses that.  An underhand serve would have no movement, no velocity and the receiver could charge the serve and put the server on the defensive from the start.  An underhand serve completely negates the advantage inherent in having the serve.

  4. no what happens when there is a bad player but can hit hard
