  1. Winter time in north America, air is very dry, because moisture in the air turns into ice. Humidity reaches close to 30%.  Our winter clothing rubs each other that genrate static, except pure cotton cloths that shall not generate static. The static charge can go up to 3 thousands volts.

If the air contains enough moisture, this static charge can easily discharge through the air to the earth ground. Most carpet material is made of nylon and it is a very good insulator for electric. It insulates between our body (feet) and ground.  As you walk through a carpet, air rubs the surface of your cloth plus the rubing between layers of cloths, that generate a very high static charge. This charge accumulates in your body and it cannot discharge to the ground because it is blocked by the carpet. That is why you feel an electro shock as you touches any metal object that attaches to the wall, because the discharge path is.......your body (3000 volts)......your finger........any metal attaches to the wall (ground).

  2. Friction from walking rubs electrons from one material to the other, accumulating charge on one or the other object.
