Question:

Why vote 'no' to Lisbon?

I have read a lot of the arguments to and for the Lisbon treaty -

The no voters claim that Ireland's corporate tax will be increased but this isn't the case. For this to happen it will require unanimous verdict from all EU states, if Ireland objects it won't happen (http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=zPn8-elwL0k&feature=related).

No campaigners are convinced that each treaty leads inevitably to militarisation. This is taken from the "The State (Ireland) shall not adopt a decision taken by the European Council to establish a common defence . . . where that common defence would involved the State (of Ireland)." Also, the "triple lock" mechanism of all Irish military operations - the UN, the Government and the Dáil all remain in place. Very little is changing in regards to Ireland's neutrality. For offensive military action Ireland shall keep its veto within the EU.

I welcome anyone to dispute these points or add a few more I might have missed on. The more diversity the better =)

  1. i am voting no... as when all the main parties say yes i know its bad news

  2. I would vote no, because like it or not, the Lisbon Treaty is taking away our rights. It wont protect out neutrality. I read the treaty and it is not in our favour. The Lisbon Treaty it trying to make Ireland a state of europe moreso than a separate country it is today. It is taking it's idea from the United States and wants to make Europe the same. The EU would deal with how our country is run. There WOULD be higher tax, as we would have to pay an extra tax to the EU. The EU would say how our schools are run, how the military is run, etc. and Ireland would have less of a say in the Eu since there would be less MPs from Ireland, so therefore Ireland would have a weaker say. England on the other hand, would have more MPs, so they would have a better say.

So this treaty is taking away our rights, questioning our neutrality, imposing higher tax, and ruling Ireland. It is true the Dail will still be there, but the EU would overrule it. and if we wanted to change something, we would have to get ONE MILLION people to sign a petition before the EU would even CONSIDER it!

Some people are saying we were given the choice to vote. That is wrong! we weren't given the CHOICE to vote, we had to vote because our CONSTITUTION PROTECTS US FROM IT!

  3. I agree with ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 110%
