  1. Russia was having a really crappy time. Their leader, Nicholas II, although a romantic, wasn't much of a leader. In fact he was a very poor leader who wasn't even aware of what was going on in Russia. This led to the Russian Revolution.

In the end, I THINK it was because of the Russian Revolution and just the political unrest in Russia at the time.

  2. Well, considering that Russia was much stronger than Austria-Hungary and were victorious whenever they faced Austrian or Turkish (as opposed to German) forces, the only way you could say they were better prepared is that they had Germany to bail them out, while Russia's allies were too far away to give them any direct help.

  3. WAS it?  AH may have been more developed industrially, but its direction of the war was incompetent in the extreme. Besides, Austria had no experience of a modern war, while Russia had. The Russians thrashed them several times.  AH hardly won a single battle on their own.
