Why was Englnad overrun and Japan was not?

In ancient times, Japan was never really overrun by foreign powers. England, on the other hand, was conquered by invaders from many other countries. What explains this?

  1. Basic geography mean a lot. England is right smack in the middle of things, surrounded by several neighboring countries and separated by a river from another. Japan, on the other hand, is an island, and believe me -- the Pacific Ocean and Sea of Japan are not friendly bodies of water to try sailing in for conquest.


  2. Actually, the last time England was invaded and conquered was 1066.
