Hello,

I am British and just watched some highlights of Mayweather V's De La Hoya for the first time and noticed Mayweather is wearing the Mexican flag colours on his shorts. Why is this? Is he trying to say something about De La Hoya or is it just somekind of a attempt to get Mexicans on his side? Was there much said about it at the time?

  1. He was being a ballbuster, plain and simple.  All about the headgames with this guy!

  2. it was either because it was 5 de mayo or.. Because his uncle trainer roger mayweather wore the same thing with a sombrero when he was known as the Mexican assasin. He was beating every Mexican he fought untill he met julio cesar Chavez and got destroyed .

So maybe he just did what his uncle did before wear the mexican color trunks and sombrero.

  3. a tribute to his uncle The mexican assasin and to show his sympathy in a ironic way because that day it was cinco de mayo.

  4. His red, white and blue shorts were at the cleaners, so his uncle Roger lent him his shorts : P

  5. Probably just to p**s Oscar off.  Floyd prides himself on his ability to p**s you off before a fight.  Oscar made the biggest mistake a fighter could make.  He made it known that he really DOES NOT LIKE Floyd Mayweather.  Floyd comes from a family of trash talkers.   It's very sad to see him feud with his father in public.

Oscar dislikes Floyd so much that it's all he could think of.  It showed in his performance early on.   When he couldn't run over Floyd in the early going, he didn't have a plan B.  It's surprising because, for all his talent in and out of the ring,  Oscar becomes unrattled so easily.

Floyd is a lot smarter than people think.  Because he talks so much trash before a fight people think he's not a smart fighter.  It gets old sometimes, the bragging and all, but Floyd  has become a master at psychological warfear.

I wish I had the guts to do what my friend did before a fight once.  We used to box together and he was a bit aggitated with his opponent's trash talking before the fight.  He entered the ring and kissed his opponent right in the mouth.

ALL the trash that guy talked went OUT THE WINDOW.  He was so rattled that he couldn't concentrate on the fight.  It was like watching someone let the air out of a baloon.  I've seen this guy fight before because we are usually in a large group and you don't always know who you will fight until fight time.  This guy couldn't even throw punches right.  He swung for the fences with every punch and was totally winded by the end of the second.   Charles took him out in the third.

If someone was to pull something similar on Floyd I wonder how he might react.  He got under Oscar's skin and took his game away before the fight.  He was EVERYWHERE and you could SEE Oscar was just Disgusted.   IT's like killing a man, burrying him and returning home only to find him at the supper table with your wife.

Oscar hates Floyd.  He needs to control this if he has a shot at winning the rematch that shouldn't even happen.   Floyd Sr. should be shamed to train ANYONE against his own son.   I dont care HOW much money Oscar has.  I dont even know if I will watch it.

  6. It way have been some attempt to get mexican fans on his side but was also a tribute to his uncle who was a former boxer known as the "mexican assassin." Probably a little of both in honor of his uncle and kind of as a joke just to get some attention from the fans.

  7. Yes, because it was 5 de mayo....and cuz his uncle did the same thing.

  8. To antagonize, he played the villian the whole build up, this was just a pretty neat finishing touch..........remember his uncle Roger was the mexican assassin, he used to wear a sombreo as a part of the show on his way into the ring.

  9. He was doing it to get into Oscar's head and make him mad.

  10. He was taunting the overwhelmingly mexican crowd.  His uncle Roger did the same thing back when he fought.  Floyd isn't Mexican nor Italian and believe me that guy doesn't do anything out of respect.

  11. He was disrespecting the Mexican heritage of De La Hoya and Mexican fight fans.  He was also probably trying to make a statement in support of his uncle Roger Mayweather (who called himself the Mexican Killer back in his day) because Roger had been TKO'd in two big fights against Julio Cesar Chavez, "El Gran Campeon Mexicano".  I don't recall much said about it when he walked out like that -- other than just another one of his antics.

  12. italy has the same colors as mexico. he could be representing his italian heritage.-blurey

  13. Yes your 100% right mayweather wore mexican colours to try to get them on his side - he done the same thing against hatton wearing manchester united colours knowing that hatton supports manchester city.

edit - goat - don't believe a word that comes out of mayweathers mouth as he shoots straight from the hip.

  14. Okay so some people here are right and some are absolutely way off, he was asked by Larry Merchant why he was wearing the Mexican colors, he said he wanted  to show that has love and respect for Mexicans and wanted to show his support of Cinco De Mayo holiday, he did make a slight mention that his uncle was known as the "Mexican Assassin" but that wasnt the reason why he wore them he said.
