  1. What makes you think they were?

  2. They have to break them up otherwise China will be too strong. More so if they include Taiwan as well. It wont be a contest..

  3. Hong Kong used to be a colony of Great Britain and came back to China in the year 1997 on the condition that China uses a policy called"one country, two systems". It means that although the mainland of China is governed under socialism, Hongkong can still maintain capitalism for 100 years. Hongkong still has a high-standard right of national autonomy. It doesnt have independent military and diplomacy but it can participate in sports events or worldwideorganizations by itself. The same policy is applied to Macow.

But the situation in Taiwan is quite different. Its much more complicated concerning the Chinese history

  4. Because they have a different NOC (National Olympic Committee), as it is a territory under Chinese sovereignity, but not technically a part of China.

(An equivalent would be the U.S. Virgin Islands or Guam, which also compete independently from the USA)

Hong Kong first competed at the Olympic Games in 1952, then as a British colony. After the sovereignty of Hong Kong was transferred to the People's Republic of China in 1997, they have been designated as "Hong Kong, China" in the Olympics.

The same thing happens with Taiwan, who also competes independently under the name of "Chinese Taipei".
