Question:

Why was I denied the right to buy a handgun?

I recently tried to purchase a new pistol in Nevada, I paid the $25 background check and it came up DENIED! In the winter of 1992 I was on a skiing trip with my friend in Utah, I was the driver he was the passenger. I got pulled over for having tinted windows and my car was searched. Well it seems the person(my friend) that was riding with me had a GRAM of marijuana in his gear bag. Even after my friend telling the deputy over and over that I had no knowledge of this, they took us both to the courthouse. The judge saw us immediately and stated we both needed to pay a $600 fine, no jail time. I have never been to jail nor had a speeding ticket in my 40 years on this earth, let alone being involved with the law! Well 16 years later this came up when I applied for a handgun purchase, stating it was a gross misdemeanor. For starters I am probably the most upstanding American citizen that I know, I thought only felons could not purchase a handgun? Not to mention I have possessed a nevada gaming card for 19 years! Please does anyone have some advice?

Thanks.

  1. This is exactly the reason why you were denied the permit to purchase.

  2. Why don't you ask the agency that denied you the right to have it?

No one can really give you an honest answer except them.

There should also be an appeals process. Ask about that.

  3. Go to court and fight it.

  4. being convicted of a drug charge...(minor according to your story but it)...will DQ you from purchasing a handgun...I am not sure of the "wait" period when you become eligable again..I would say seek out your state rep or district rep and get some clarification on it...or just move to TX and buy all the guns you want...but you would still have the same drug charge on your criminal history...so good luck

  5. Look for private sellers. No red tape.
