Why was King Louis XIV called the "Sun King?"?

Peradventure, this was a self-proclaimed title.

Why was he called this?

Because for the 74 year he reigned, over 50 of them he controlled Frace's government with an iron fist.  There was a notion that, as the planets revolve around the sun, so do the courts and nobles revolve around him.

He also aligned himself with gods (I think Apollo).

He was an absolute monarch, as expressed in the famous quote attributed to him, "L'etat c'est moi" (I am the state). Identifying himself with Apollo, the Greek god of the sun, Louis XIV came to be called "the Sun King."

Today Louis XIV is perhaps best remembered as the king who built Versailles.

King Louis XIV in the early years of his reign, loved the theater of dance, based upon the exercises for fencing he develop ballet. He would sponsor lavish performances and often performed in them. His favorite role was to be Apollo, the god of the sun. He would dress in a gold costume and have his face, head and hands dust with gold.
