  1. He was known as Richard the Lionheart (from the French, Cœur de Lion), even before his accession, because of his reputation as a great military leader. He was named for his courage and prowess on the battlefield. At only 16, Richard had his own command, putting down rebellions in Poitou against his father, Henry II. While he spoke very little English and spent very little time in his Kingdom, preferring to use it as a source of revenue to support his armies, he was seen as a pious hero by his subjects. He remains one of the very few Kings of England remembered by his epithet, not number, and is an enduring, iconic figure in England.

  2. because he spent so little time, money and effort in England that his contemporaries knew him only as someone who whizzed from battlefield to siege to tournament, seemingly immortal. However, an archer got under his skin with a poisoned arrow in 1199 and he died while besieging a castle.

His nobles etc flayed the archer and put his skin on the castle wall, but did not help Richard.

In the 21st century, he would have become a tennis pro or a rock star and be called Richard Coeur de Hyena.

Not at all a nice young man to take home to mother.

  3. Because he was kind and gentle but had the feirce temper of a lion! I hope this helps Good Luck!

  4. because he was brave

  5. King Richard the Lionheart (Nickname : Richard the Lionheart, Coeur de Lion)

Richard and his brothers constantly fought with their father King Henry II who had incarcerated their mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine. When King Henry II died Richard was greatly grieved at his father's death. He visited Fontevraud Abbey Church and when he saw his father's dead body, he cried out, "Alas! it was I who killed him!" But it was too late and he could not make up for what he had done. King Richard I of England had to think about the Crusade he had promised to make. Richard was so brave and strong that he was called Lion-heart; he was very noble and good in some ways, but his fierce, passionate temper did him a great deal of harm.

    best of luck to you!

  6. A fairly obvious one - for his courage in battle, which was just about his only personal quality.  Interestingly, it seems to have been a nickname awarded by other fighting men, not creeping courtiers, so he must have been a very outstanding warrior.
