The simple answer is:  Only Time Magazine knows. i mean there are a lot of people they could have chose.

Perhaps they chose LeBron because of his guarantee considering he was part of the last bronze medal team- and so now there is a story with the theme of redemption.

This is Kobe's first Olympics- while his motivation is the same too- to bring the gold back to where it belongs- but hey, they could have picked any of the guys- and LeBron and Kobe are two of the most marketable NBA players.  

You'd pick Kobe, I'd pick Kobe, but Time picked LeBron (not a big deal seriously) i just care about TEAM USA bringing the gold back to the U.S.
