  2. Oda Nobunaga wasn't assassinated. He committed suicide, called  seppuku, under pressure from Akechi Mitsuhide, one of his generals. Akechi Mitsuhide wanted to be the new emperor, and this couldn't happen while Oda Nobunaga was still alive. So, to avoid a coup d'etat and die honorably, Oda Nobunaga died at Honnō-ji.
