  1. Because he wanted it to be random.

    I'm glad I knew at 3am.

  2. Bad planning or Bad vibes in the smoke filled back rooms. It leaked way to early.

What ever it was it was done badly

  3. Evidently it has something to do with that 3 a.m. phone call thing. Some marketing genius with the Obama team thought it would be "cute" to send out his text message at 3 a.m. He was trumped by Biden announcing he is the VP at midnight.

  4. because he was up on an all night cocaine binge

  5. Because John McCain and his election crew were sleeping like babies and even if woken up they would doddle around in a confused haze so they could not respond.

  6. Corny campaign tactic so people would view him as the one to answer the call at 3 AM

  7. Probably so the man could get a break from the press.

  8. it seems that the biden nom was accidentally leaked... they said they were probably going to do it that morning around 10 am, but had to rush it up after it was leaked around 1 am...

  9. Because he was testing how far he could go and more importantly how far you and the press would go to follow/worship him.

You signed up for his message and now you're on his speed dial.

Stay tuned for the next message from his highness.

  10. The plan was to get contact information for more supporters (and potential volunteers and donors) by getting them to sign up for text messages.  One incentive for someone to do this was to promise that they'd hear FIRST, straight from the Obama campaign, via text message if they'd sign up.

The plan was to roll out the choice with much fanfare and hype on Saturday morning.  However, the campaign had to let the Secret Service know who the choice would be so they could attach a security detail to the VP candidate.

The Secret Service dispatched their detail, and then leaked it to the press on Friday evening.  All the news services were getting wind of it, and it was going to be (and was) on the headlines of all the papers in the country on Saturday morning.

Faced with the embarassing prospect of all these text-message signer-uppers finding out about it in the morning paper, they went ahead and sent out the text message in the wee hours of the morning, to make sure the news was delivered before the papers hit the stand.

As far as it being 3 AM, that's only true for one of our nation's 6 time zones, so unless you are on Eastern time, that's not when it was sent out.
