Mickelson left a voicemail message for a Callaway Golf executive praising their driver and golf ball, and thanking them for their help in getting some equipment for his brother. Unfortunately this message was played to various Calloway representatives, and eventually got back to Mickelson's sponsors at Titleist, who dropped him 16 months before his contract with them was set to run out. Mickelson then signed up with Callaway although making the change in clubs just before playing at the Ryder Cup was a move that left him little time to grow used to them, and he failed to play well at the competition.
