Some people referred to Philadelphia as the "workshop of the world".  Steam locomotives, trolley cars and chemicals were produced here.  The city was the textile center of the nation.  Carpet, hats, leather goods, hoisery and clothing of all kinds were some of the products made in Philadelphia.

  3. Philadelphia was called the workshop of the world because  so many things were produced in Philadelphia in the 19th century. Steel, textiles, shipbuilding, publishing, machine tools, petroleum, railways, food & agriculture, electricity and brewing were some of the biggest industries. But by the 1970's jobs were being exported & many of these industries went out of business. You can still see many closed textile & steel factories in some parts of the city today, like Kensington.
