  1. It had nothing to do with her birth.

She was excommunicated because she refused to return England to the Roman Catholic Church. She was a Protestant. However, because she renounced the Pope's power over her, it didn't much matter. And she was the head of the Church of England (which was also Catholic but not Roman Catholic under the Pope).

  2. According to the Roman Catholic Church, Queen Elizabeth I's birth was illegitimate. Her father, Henry VIII of England broke away from the authority of the Roman Catholic Church after the Pope excommunicated Henry in 1533 over his divorce from Catherine of Aragon. Henry needed a son desperately, and believed that his royal mistress, Anne Boleyn was carrying the future heir of England. However, Anne gave birth to a sad girl, the future Queen Elizabeth I.

Queen Elizabeth was deemed illegitimate, first by her own father who declared her illegitimate after her mother was executed. And second, she was always referred to as the "b*****d Queen" by the Catholics. Since the divorce between Henry and Catherine of Aragon was not legally annulled by the Roman Catholic Church, therefore it was invalid, which meant that Elizabeth was a "b*****d."

Note: Although Queen Elizabeth established Protestantism as the country's religion, her religion laws showed "tolerance" towards Catholicism, she did not persecute Catholics with conviction - she adopted a moderate approach. She allowed Catholics to practice their faith in their own homes, as long as they obey her laws. However, I guess this was not enough to win the hearts of the Holy Father, and the rest of the Roman Catholic Church.

  3. Because she revived, joined, and made binding on the English people the Church of England, run by a council of English bishops and headed by the monarch of England, namely herself.  This church was started by her father, King Henry VIII, and abolished by her half sister, Queen Mary.

  4. She wasn't.  She was born a Protestant.  She never belonged to the Roman Catholic Church.

  5. Elizabeth was the illegitimate child of Henry VIII(Mom was Anne Boleyn and he was never really divorced from Catherine), she was never going to get it sanctioned by Rome so she declared a Protestant nation for England.

At that time Rome was involved with all the political intrigues and declared her a 'pretender' to the throne which left the Catholics off the hook to give her allegiance, she was excommunicated in 1570 nobody on the continental part of Europe thought she was legit either.

  6. She refused to be like her sister "bloody Mary" and force people to be Roman Catholic. She believed that Protestants were just as good as Roman Catholics, which, at the time was unthinkable She was refusing to listen the church so they did not recognie her as Queen which at the time was important.
