  1. Some of the most famous monuments in the world were built by slaves.  And yes, it was a brutal, albeit acceptable practice.

  2. I was in St. Petersburg in 2006. Didn't realize the city was built by slaves. I must admit the Russians at the time were very brutal. So are the Chinese too. Didn't you know the Great Wall of China was built by slaves? I call it semantics. Slaves or Workers? Peter the Great had to build a city on the Neva River. He got some slave labor and forced them to build the city. I imagine it was a very tough society to live in. Could imagine what it was like under Lenin's rule? Communist think of sacrificing one for the many. They didn't believe it to be brutal but to modern Western standards, it is totally brutal and demoralizing.

  3. Russia has a history of oppression under the czars and Bolsheviks where use of slaves are prevalent such as building the famous St. Petersburg.

  4. Wasn't Russia a serfdom at that time.

All histories of modernization is written in the blood of the laborers.

    Serfs

    Slaves

    proletariat.

The Lords, masters and bourgeoisie will have their way.

  5. sometimes they called Russian peasants of 17-mid 19 century slaves but it's not the correct word.

The correct word is "krepostnoy" and was very different from slaves in USA.

Those peasants were under state (or master's) management and got to do state's assignments.

Due to bad medical assistance (and mismanagement) those peasants (and soldiers) died in large number if gathered in big groups.

For example: death rate among solders was 3 times more from illnesses then from battle wounds (it was true til 1914 war)

  6. Because they could do it, - force thousands to die, - for the glory of mother russia.

Anywhere these censorship of the press,- you'll find that absolute power corrupts absolutely.
