  1. Both had the same goal, derived from different paths . .   it is more a matter of TAO than yin and yang.

  2. Jefferson and Adams were two strong personalities who complemented each other fairly well, at least during the early days of the formation of the US.  Jefferson was quiet and introspective (and not very practical), with the gift for the perfect phrase in his writings.  He was also the more philosophical of the two, thanks to his wide readings in the Scottish philosophers (among others).  Adams, on the other hand, was notoriously contentious and headstrong, but the young nation needed someone like him who was willing to push others along the path to revolution.  Adams was also an excellent writer, but his prose was more legalistic, due to his training.  Thus their complementary nature--Jefferson's yin to Adams' yang (or vice versa).

Jefferson also tended to be surprising politically motivated, and many of his actions particularly while president caused huge problems for the US.  His actions against Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, both excellent men in their own rights who did much good for the Republic, are particularly heinous.  Adams, of course, tried to strip away basic freedoms while president, but that didn't go over so well either.
