Why was Venice, Italy powerful in the 1400's!?

  1. Wikipedia has a good history of Venice.

    Venice was powerful for its trade and for its capability to build ships. The Venetians were probably the 1st to invent the assembly line.

    The Venetians didn't just buy from the east to trade throughout Europe but was also manufactured and sold fine cloths, embroideries, glass (even poor Venetians had glass windows!), ships (mentioned) and banking services.
