Why was a valley a good site and situation for a settlement in the past??

Rainwater flows into the valley providing irrigation for subsistence crops.  The land will be flat, they didn't have to go up and down the hillside.  And it allows for a ecohabit for hunting game, in the hills.

there is usually a river flowing through the valley, so its a source of water (the point brought up above). and valleys are also difficult to enter, as there are highlands on both sides. this acts as a form of protection to foreign invaders.
