  2.   There were several reasons why Hamilton wanted the National

Government to assume, Assumption, the States debt.

      1. it would get those states to support the new Federal Government.

      2. These states had acquire the debt by borrowing the money so that

they could fight the British during the American War for

Independence, commonly called The Revolutionary War. Hamilton

believed that the National Government had an obligation to assist

the states since ALL the states had benefited from those fighting the

British for the Nation's, and their, independence.

As you may know Jefferson and Madison opposed this Assumption

because they thought it was unfair towards the states which had paid

off their debts, like Virginia where these 2 were from.  The president,

      G. Washington, came up with an ingenuous compromise which had

the Government paying off the states debt in return the Nation's

Capital was moved to land donated by Virginia/Maryland along the

Potomac River, very close to washington's Mt. Vernon estate. This

new city was to be called The District of Columbia, Washington DC.

Almost everyone was happy, except the people in Philadelphia, the

      old capital.

                             Hope that helps. Packers.
