In 1840, Germans introduced the 9-pin bowling (Kegel 9-pin bowling, which used a diamond formation of skittles) in USA. But it was banned in 1841 due to the associated gambling, cheating, drinking, etc.

To circumvent the ban, the American version of bowling added another extra pin and a triangular formation of pins, like we know it today and was reintroduced in 1868.
