Galileo is responsible for the re-birth of modern science, and the scientific method.  Not only was he a great and brilliant physicist, but he had the charisma and courage to take on the church orthdoxy at a time when religious authorities were the final word on everything and literally held the power of delivering torture and death.  

At issue was whether any man could question established and entrenched religious truths.  If god is all knowing, and religion communicated the word of god, then how can they be wrong?  To which Galileo answered  ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€ÂœThe Bible shows the way to go to heaven, not the way the heavens go”.

Galileo, observing the moons of Jupiter, discovered the first easily demonstrable evidence refuting Geocentrism which stated that all the Universe revolved around the Earth.

First off, he invented the telescope. He had worked with Copernicus and helped him prove to everyone Earth was round. He was a great Astronomer, discovering Jupiter's four main moons. (Europa, Callisto, Io, and Ganymede.) He also discovered Saturn's rings, and thought they were hands. William Hershey corrected this. So he did help change not only history, but Exploration as well.

he is the father of modern astronomy (he designed a telescope and did a lot of essential observation of out solar system). he contributed a great deal in astronomy, physics, mathematics and philosophy. he's the one that popularized the heliocentric theory. he made great accomplices in a lot in many fields of physics.
