No one knows for sure, but one theory I heard was that way back in about the 1400s sheperds hit small rocks with a stick to lay out a boundary for their flock.  The further and more accurate they could be the better pasture they would stake out for their animals.  It is said this practice eventually evolved into golf.  Most say the Scottish invented modern golf, but it is said they got the idea from the Dutch.  No one really knows, it's like asking who was the first person to eat a lobster?
