Ethnic groups within the States wanted to carve out a portion for themselves.

Like Punjab and Haryana - Haryana was carved out of Punjab.

HP always existed as it is.

Uttarkhand was carved out of UP.

till 1966 the 1st of Nov that year,the present day Punjab,Haryana and Himachal were one state called Punjab with capital at Shimla till 1952 and then in the new city of Chandigarh

In 1966 , the punjabi speaking areas of the state were seperated and those speaking haryanvi were made into a seperate state after an agitation

the state was named Haryana

then in 1968...YS Parmar launched an agitation  for a seperate hill state on lines of haryana  which was finally granted in 1971  and the hill state of Himachal Pradesh came into existence
