Why was it important for Romans to maintain consistency in their architecture?

Please help if you have any ideas at all! With an emphasis on Roman Temples.

  1. ratios and geometry are key to understanding this! - was trying to find something for you but computer crashed........but look at past papers for history of art A levels..........(there are very specific questions and key points in th mark schemes very handy!)

    the architecture had to be a monument........ they pride themselves on mathmatics/philosophy and order so this translates into their architecture - also constilations and their gods were taken into acoount - look up the magic ratio etc...


  2. Had you asked this of Greek architecture I could have an answer for you. However, Roman architecture was far from consistent. Roman architecture was influenced by so many regional variations that consistency is not a term that should be applied to it. There were some standard elements one might expect to find in any Roman construction, such as the arch and axial symmetry, but there are plenty of exceptions. Roman architectural styles also do not follow any sort of clear progression like their Greek predecessors. It is very difficult to date anything Roman stylistically.
