Why was it important not to exceed Idc/max for the inductor?

  1. Depends on the inductor.  If it is an air-cored inductor, the limit is going to be determined by the safe current carrying capacity of the wire from which it is made.

    If it's an 'iron-cored' inductor, the problem would be magnetic saturation of the core which would significantly reduce the inductance.
