Why was it important when LouisXVI swore his allegiance to the French Constituion?

  1. It was a step toward France becoming, like Great Britain, a constitutional monarchy, in contrast to the absolutism ushered in by Louis XIV over 100 years previously.

    For good or ill, it also was a major step toward abolishing the monarchy altogether, and certainly created a shortcut for his journey to the guillotine.
