Japan wanted control of the pacific, and Germany thinking we couldn't fight a battle on two fronts declared war on us and Italy was Germany's allies during the war, so they declared war too.  Big mistake.

Now today I'm sure there would be those who would say why declare war on anyone. OK, declare war on Japan, but not Germany or Italy. They didn't attack us. Yeah I know it is a little like comparing apples to oranges to even equate Afghanistan and Iraq to Japan, Germany, and Italy. But it's not completely dissimilar.

Japan bombed Pearl Harbor.  The US went to war with them because of that.  Germany and Italy had a mutual defense pack with Japan, so when the US declared war on Japan, Germany and Italy automatically declared war on the US.  

We were already backing Britain and France with aid for fighting Germany and Italy.

Japan attacked us where the US was not concentrating at the time, and destroyed a lot of expensive things.

Japan was also focused on capturing Hawaii and Alaska

they did capture some Alaskan islands but the US won them back.
