  3. It comes down to this. The English and their Burgundians allies had suffered a series of embarrassing losses to the French.

    They could explain these losses in several ways, all of which were unflattering to the English and Burgundian leadership.

    Alternatively, they could claim that they had been the victims of witchcraft. Guess what they chose?

    As is usual with governments (and individuals for that matter) its always easier to blame others than to accept responsibility.

    So Joan had to be convicted of witchcraft and then burned before anyone could rescue and rehabilitate her image.
