  1. Because it wasn't a result of a gradual evolution of society, but more like an outcome of long-term reforms initiated by the ruling class in order to adopt western ways which have shown to be superior to Japanese traditionalism.

  3. Modern Japan can said to have begun in 1945, after their defeat in WWll. The country was ruled by Douglas MacAuthur for 7 years. Its present constitution came into being at that time and its economic rise started then too. It was created in this way by the US so as to be counter to the growing communist power in Asia, China and Russia in particular, and to sow the seeds of democracy in that part of the world, a part that had not seen this type of government before. The bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki blew away the old Japan and ushered in the new era, one set up by the US but brought to great success by the hard working and resourceful people of Japan.
