My check was denied by Home Depot. Don't have any idea why, have plenty of overdraft on this account.

  1. You should never try to write a check if you do not have the funds in your account to cover the check.  Your overdraft is not for you to spend, it's there to protect you in case you make a mistake.

  2. There is a system that many retailers use - can't recall the name of it now - but you must be reported for something in that system.  Just get a debit card and use that.  Or you can call Home Depot, ask them what system they use for check verification and contact that company to find out why they have you listed as a risk.  Just keep in mind that this company does not have access to your bank balance or anything like they.  I'm not sure where they compile their information from but they definitely do not have access to your bank records.

  3. Home Depot uses a company called Certigy to process checks. This company is used by many retailers such as Macy's, Dillard's, Best Buy, Circuit City, Sears, Bed Bath & Beyond and who knows how many others.

They do not access your account to see if there are funds in the account.

One reason that a check could be turned down is because you wrote a bad check in any of the stores using Certigy's service or who share information with Certigy. Another reason could be that you did not write a check but you presented a check written by someone else such as a friend or your employer and you were simply the presenter of the check. This is called a carrier check. IF you were asked for your ID on such a check and that check bounced then your ID would be on a negative file and any checks you present in the future with your ID would be denied (whether they were on your account or someone else's account) until the matter is cleared up.

They should have given you a slip of paper with Certigy's phone number on it so you can call and have the matter resolved.

  4. Most stores use some check verification service.  It could be that you aren't in their system or the check was larger than their approval criteria.   I've heard of people getting checks turned down because they didn't normally write checks and the verification service didn't have them in their system.

Find out what verification company Home Depot uses and check to see why they refused your check.  They may have just input the numbers wrong.

  5. Maybe your Balance was to Low  (Overdraft protection, or NOT)  AND they're not big on People skating/kiting Money!
