Why was my letter returned?

Question

I was sent a letter recently, but I never received it.

The sender has recently told me that it was returned to him marked 'NOT CALLED FOR'.

I never received this letter, and as far as I can see from briefly scanning the CCTV covering the door, the postman has not been to my door in a long while(I use a mailbox for the majority of my mail).

Does anybody know what 'NOT CALLED FOR' means?

Or why they sent my letter back?
