Why was my pay not taxed?

I didnt get charged tax this month and its worrying me. I paid NI though. Any ideas? Its only my 2nd month at the job so my 2nd payment if that helps. I earn £11500 and my code is 543L

  1. What were you doing from 6th April (the start of the tax year) to starting this job? If it is your first job, you will have a backlog of unused tax allowances from the start of the tax year.

    Also, is your code number on a cumulative or month 1 basis. The latter would show a 1 or X after the code number. That would affect it. If your code number is cumulative, and you paid no tax, either you overpaid before, or none is due.


  2. You can earn up to £5430 before being taxed. if you get paid monthly and this months pay packet was less than last months, the tax people may think you will not make the £5430, so will not charge tax, you would need to earn over £450 a month to reach the £5430. (remember you only pay tax on the bit over £5430). NI payments are a smaller % but start at a lower amount. Does this fit with you? I advise you to speak with your boss at work about it.
